Item: Confederate 12 Pounder Shell
Gun: 12-pounder smooth-bore, 4.62-inch caliber.
Fuzing: Copper adaptor for paper time fuze.
Construction: Cast iron.
Approximate size: Weight: 9.6 pounds. Diameter: 4.52 inches.
Condition: Very good, excavated, with minimal surface pitting. A mold seam is visible at its equator. The copper fuze adaptor is present and in good shape. This case-shot was lightly clear coated at some point. It has been deactivated and is ready for display. No repairs.
Recovered: Unknown
Comments: According to Peter George, co-author of "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War", this type of shell would have a polygonal cavity with diamond pattern interior walls. This design incorporated lines of weakness which improved the fragmentation of the shell upon explosion. This Confederate shell will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery or general relic collection.
