Comments: Colonel John F. Biemeck has extensively covered artillery projectiles found in North America dating to 1759-1865 in four massive volumes thus far, with an additional volume on the way. This shell was inspected by him who concluded that it was indeed British. According to his listing in the above-mentioned reference book under Remarks he states: "It is possible that this shell was exported to the Confederacy".

Also, regarding 12-Pounder British projectiles, he writes: "The 12-pounder was a popular for field artillery and use aboard naval vessels. 12-pounder projectiles were produced in shot, common shell, mortar/howitzer shell and spherical case shot. It was fired from guns, howitzers, carronades and mortars. It was used in all American campaigns and was the most common caliber encountered at War of 1812 land battle sites."
