Item: Confederate-12 Pounder Shell with Original Wood Fuze Plug
Gun: 12-pounder smoothbore, 4.62-inch caliber.
Construction: Cast iron shell.
Fuzing: Wood plug for paper time fuze.
Approximate size: Weight: 8 pounds. Diameter: 4.45 inches.
Condition: Very good, excavated. The shell is still in its "as dug" condition with the exception of having been professionally deactivated. The exterior surface is moderately pitted but stable. The original wood fuze plug is still present, complete and left undisturbed. No repairs.
Recovered: Sailor's Creek, VA area.
Comments: Recovering an artillery shell with the wood fuze still intact is a rarity, and this one is complete and in great shape. This shell was acquired directly from the family of the digger and will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery or general relic collection.
