Item: Confederate 12 pounder side loader case-shot.
Construction: Cast iron with copper fuze adaptor and lead side plug.
Approximate size: Weight: 8.4 pounds. Diameter: 4.5 inches.
Condition: Very good, excavated, with very light pitting on the iron body and no repairs. It has a strong mold seam and a copper fuze plug. The lead side plug is present, but for some reason, has an uneven hole that extends into its interior contents of an asphalt/pitch matrix with iron balls. According to Peter George, co-author of "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War", the hole may have been an earlier attempt at deactivation. This case-shot has been very lightly clear coated and professionally deactivated.
Recovered: Gettysburg, PA
Comments: This artillery shell will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery or general relic collection.
