This base portion to a Confederate 2.9-inch Read "Virginia Prototype" shell was acquired directly from the digger. The shell's iron is stable, and its copper sabot is present which now has a green patina. Visible on the sabot are several lands and grooves caused by the rifling of the cannon tube. A lathe dimple is present in the bottom of the base. It weighs approximately 1.8 pounds and measures approximately 2.9 inches in diameter and is approximately 2.5 inches in height. It has been treated with electrolysis and paraffin so as to preserve the iron. This Read "Virginia Prototype" shell base will be an excellent educational tool or display piece for any artillery or general relic collection.
