Item: Confederate 20-Pounder "Blunt Nose" Sleeved Long Read Shell
Construction: Cast iron with wood fuze adaptor and thin iron sabot.
Fuzing: Paper time fuze.
Approximate size: Weight: 16.6 pounds. Diameter: 3.59 inches. Length: 9-3/4 inches.
Condition: Good, un-fired, excavated. The shell is still in its "as dug" condition with the exception of having been professionally deactivated. The iron body of the shell is moderately pitted. The wood fuze adaptor is no longer present however remnants may still be. The thin iron sabot is present along with a shallow lathe dimple on the base bottom. There are no repairs.
Recovered: Sailor's Creek, VA area.
Comments: In a discussion with Peter George, co-author of "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War", regarding this shell, there is a lightly visible line or "step-down" at the base of its "blunt" nose which gives this round its "sleeved" look. He also notes in his book on page 280 that "there are many variations" of this type of shell and that "most late war specimens have wood fuze plugs and seemed to have been shipped all over the Confederacy, though most turn up in 1863-65 Va. sites."
The shell was acquired directly from the family of the digger and if you prefer the "just out of the ground" appearance then this Read shell will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery, battlefield, or general relic collection.
