Item: Confederate 3-Inch Bourreleted Read Shell
Construction: Cast iron with copper fuze adaptor and copper ring sabot.
Fuzing: Paper time fuze.
Approximate size: Weight: 6 pounds. Diameter: 2.94 inches. Length: 7-1/8 inches.
Condition: Fired, excavated. The iron body of the shell has mild pitting and base chipping typical for these particular projectiles. Printed on the side in white paint is "BETHESDA CHURCH / 1963", its recovery location and date. The copper fuze adaptor is present and has a pleasing deep green patina. One of the additional images will show what are believed to be prominent lathe marks on the side of the adaptor cap. The entire copper sabot is missing. A visible lathe dimple is present on the bottom of the base. The shell has been deactivated and treated with electrolysis so as to preserve the iron. There are no repairs.
Recovered: 1963 Bethesda Church, VA.
Comments: According to Peter George, co-author of "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War", "base chipping was the result of the over-expansion of its thick copper sabot." While the shell will stand upright on its base, it does lean due to a small, chipped section of the base as seen in the additional images. This Read shell was acquired directly from the family of the digger and it will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery, battlefield, or general relic collection.
