Confederate 3 Inch Read Shell - Unfired - Rare "Half Moon" Flame Groove

SOLD

Item: Confederate 3 Inch Read Shell - Unfired
Construction: Cast iron with wood fuze plug/adaptor and copper ring sabot with very rare wide half-moon shaped flame groove which continues across bottom bourrelet (see additional images).
Fuzing: Paper time fuze.
Approximate size: Weight: 7.6 pounds. Diameter: 2.94 inches. Length: 7-1/2 inches.
Condition: Very good, un-fired, excavated. Its fuze plug and copper ring sabot are present. A pronounced lathe chock is present on one side just below the shell nose, (these were typically removed from the nose by the manufacturer). Its iron body is moderately pitted, has been cleaned and lightly clear coated.  The shell has been deactivated and there are no repairs.
Recovered: New Market, VA area.
Comments: According to Peter George, co-author of "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War", very few Read shells have flame grooves and, most that do, have a narrow groove. This is an exceptionally scarce variety due to having a flame groove AND its rare shape. Peter also commented that the shells copper ring sabot was "particularly beautiful!" This artillery shell will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery, battlefield, or general relic collection.
