CS 58 Cal. Gardner "High-Base" Bullet with Mac Mason's Lettering

SOLD

This excavated Confederate .58 caliber Gardner "high-base" bullet is in very good condition and is from the collection of the legendary Mac Mason. Mac Mason was a historian, author, and artist who applied his skillful and artistic lettering to many Civil War artifacts. This bullet is one of those artifacts and is marked with his recognizable lettering style. This example is marked on one side: "CS. RICHMOND / HIGH BASE" representing bullet type. Mason’s use of blue ink, in this instance, is an unusual feature for his bullets as most were lettered in black. Mac Mason also co-authored "Civil War Projectiles II Small Arms & Field Artillery with Supplement" which is still widely used by diggers and collectors in the identification of Civil War bullets, cartridges, artillery shells and fuzes. In the additional images to the left of this description is an image of Mac Mason and additional information about him. The surface of this bullet has a white patina and will be an excellent addition to any Civil War bullet or general relic collection. Approx. .58 inch diameter & 1.08 inch length. Ref. McKee & Mason #352.
