Item: Confederate 6-Pounder "Side-Loader" Case-Shot - Lead Side-Plug
Gun: 6-pounder smoothbore, 3.67-inch caliber.
Construction: Cast iron.
Fuzing: Copper fuze adaptor for paper time fuze.
Approximate size: Weight: 4.6 pounds. Diameter: 3.56 inches.
Condition: Good, excavated. The surface has moderate to heavy pitting. Its copper fuze adaptor and lead side plug are both present. Other than being rinsed off, it is still in its "as dug" condition and with no repairs. It has been deactivated.
Recovered: Sailor's Creek, VA area.
Comments: According to "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War Revised and Supplemented 1993 Edition", by Thomas S. Dickey and Peter C. George, on page 32, "almost all (6-pdr side-loaders case-shots) have come from 1864-65 Va. and N.C. sites".
