Item: Confederate .71 Caliber Rifled Musket Bullet - Huge
Condition: Un-fired, excavated, excellent. Nose cast with a deep parabolic cavity. The bullet has a tan-white surface patina. When the bullet was recovered, the rings were coated with a dark brown woodsy substance as a result of ground action. Over time this substance loosened and ultimately flaked away. What remained was a thin layer of a white substance believed to be used as a sealant between the bullet and its paper cartridge. No repairs.
Recovered: Spotsylvania Court House (aka. Bloody Angle), VA area.
Approximate size: .694-inch diameter, 1.28-inch length, 789 grains weight.
Reference: An example is pictured and described in the following Civil War bullet reference book: (See Comments section below)
See above page in the additional images.
Comments: This huge bullet was acquired by Virginia Relics directly from the digger mentioned in the above reference book page. It will be an excellent addition to any Civil War bullet or general relic collection.
