SOLD

Item: Confederate Bayonet Adaptor Marked "B. G & M / RICHMOND. VA. / PAT. SEP 2. 1861"
Construction:
Cast brass.
Approximate size:
Interior diameter .934 inch; length .808 inch.
Condition:
Excellent, excavated. The brass has a very pleasing deep dark green patina. Its small tightening screw is no longer present. Stamped into the adaptor is "B. G & M / RICHMOND. VA. / PAT. SEP 2. 1861". The majority of the mark is visible with a few of the letters and numbers either unclear or not present (see all additional images). Also clearly stamped in the device is its mating number of "81". The additional images will clearly show the manufacturing crudeness, typical of Confederate military products, which may include casting flaws and file marks. There are no bends or repairs.
Recovered: Unknown
Reference:
Similar Confederate bayonet adaptors can be found in the following relic reference books:

  • "Civil War Artifacts" by Howard Crouch on page 75, item 5.
  • "Excavated Artifacts from Battlefields and Campsites of The Civil War" by Stanley S. Phillips on page 178, item 4.

See scans of the above pages in the additional images.

Comments: Confederate bayonet adaptors are rarely recovered especially marked examples. Manufactured by the firm of Boyle, Gamble and McFee of Richmond, VA., the adaptor enabled earlier manufactured rifles to be properly mounted with sword bayonets.  The firm made two models and this example is the rarer second model. Not all of the second model were marked however this one is, which makes it even rarer. Its mating number "81" was used to match the adaptor with its proper sword bayonet. This excavated example will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War firearm, edged weapon, battlefield, campsite or general relic collection.
