Item: Confederate Tin "Drum" Style Canteen - Manassas
Use: Water container
Approximate size: 6-7 inches diameter (varies due to distortion)
Condition: Fair, excavated. Canteen is remarkably solid and was lightly clear coated at some point so as to preserve it. It is dented on both sides with on side more severe than the other. There are two large holes and one small hole on the strap guide rim with two of the three strap guides still present. The spout is no longer present. Printed on an old label attached by string to one of the strap holders is "CONFEDERATE DRUM CANTEEN RECOVERED FROM CAMP WIGFALL MANASSAS". There are no repairs.
Recovered: Camp Wigfall, Manassas, VA area.
Reference: Examples of similar, but not exact, tin "drum" canteens are found in the following canteen reference books:

Comments: Tin drum style canteens were commonly used by Confederate soldiers and this one will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War canteen, campsite, battlefield, or general relic collection.
