Backmark: "W. DOWLER / SUPERIOR QUALITY" dm
Design: Lined old English "E" on a plain field.
Construction: Convex, two-piece
Approximate size: 23 mm.
Condition: Good, excavated, shank missing. The button's surface has a green patina with gilt remaining in areas along the letter "E" and the rim. There is a slight push to left center front. The backmark on the rear is difficult to see but definitely there. There is also a gentle push in the rear. No cracks or repairs.
Recovered: Unknown
Reference: Tice: CSE215A1 Albert: CS 154
Comments: Engineers buttons are rarely recovered and this excavated example, while imperfect, is a very attractive button. It will be an excellent display button for any excavated Civil War button or general relic collection.
