Item: Confederate Time Fuze Adaptor for Spherical Projectile.
Construction: Cast copper.
Approximate size: Diameter: 1.21 inches. Length: 1.36 inches.
Condition: Very good, excavated. The two spanner holes to either side of the center fuse hole are clearly visible. A portion of the paper time fuze is visible within the center hole. The fuse body has surface imperfections and thread distortion. It has an overall dusty yellow-green patina with no cracks, breaks, or repairs.
Recovered: in the 1970's from the Wilderness, VA area.
Reference: Similar examples of this type fuze are pictured in:
Scans of the above noted reference book pages are included in the additional images.
Comments: This adaptor was acquired directly from the digger, Virginia relic hunter Henry Foster. The length of this particular adaptor indicates that it was for use in spherical artillery projectiles. The two spanner holes accommodated a wrench used to screw it into the shell. Once the adaptor was in place, a paper time fuze, was inserted into the center hole. Amazingly, after over a hundred years of being in the ground, a portion of the paper time fuze is still secured within this particular adaptor. This Confederate time fuze adaptor will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery or general relic collection.
