Confederate Gardner "Blow-Through" Bullet

SOLD

This excavated Confederate .58 caliber Gardner "blow-through" bullet is a unique relic and an excellent example of the result of a poorly manufactured bullet. According to the Thomas and Thomas' "A Handbook of Civil War Bullets and Cartridges" on page 45 item 163, this was "caused when an air bubble or some other flaw was cast into the bullet. Upon firing, the gases blew through the nose of the weak bullet." An example of a similar "blow-through" Gardner bullet can be found in the above mentioned book on page 44 as item 163 and also in "Civil War Projectiles II Small Arms & Field Artillery with Supplement" by W. Reid McKee and M. E. Mason, Jr. on page 74, item 1. While this wasn't a frequent occurence, it did happen from time to time. This example will be an excellent Confederate display piece for any Civil war bullet or general relic collection. Approximately .58 x 1.14 inch.
