Item: Confederate Infantry Coat Button - "Script I"
Backmark: Either blank or not visible.
Design: Lined old English "I" on a plain field.
Construction: Convex, two-piece.
Approximate size: 22 mm.
Condition: Fair, excavated, secure shank present and flattened to back. Mostly dark olive-green patina. Button is complete but flattened at some point. No cracks, breaks, or repairs.
Recovered: The local Virginia digger could not remember location recovered.
Reference: Tice: CSI215B Albert: CS 177
Comments: It has been speculated by some collectors that buttons were intentionally flattened to be possibly used as poker chips, or for checkers, or other game pieces. The button was acquired directly from the digger and will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War button or general relic collection.
