Item: Confederate Infantry Coat Button - Stippled "I" - Repaired
Back mark: " * H T & B * / MANCHESTER" dm with outer ring of dots.
Design: Stippled Roman letter "I" on a plain field.
Construction: Convex, two-piece.
Approximate size: 25 mm.
Condition: Fair, excavated, secure shank present and bent over to back. Mottled green patina with moderate pushes to the front. Approximately one fifth of the rim is missing with a slightly lesser amount reinforced with clear epoxy to the button edge. The remaining rim portion is present and in place. The back is pushed in towards the front with a bit of concreted soil under the shank. There are no cracks or breaks in the front or rear. The backmark, while present, is only partially visible.
Recovered: Richmond, VA area.

Comments: According to "Uniform Buttons of the United States 1776-1865" by Warren K. Tice, with the exception of the Marine button, the Infantry button "is the most difficult to find of the H. T. & B. letter series". This Confederate Infantry coat button will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War button or general relic collection.
