Date: September 2, 1861
Printer: Hoyer & Ludwig, Richmond, VA.
Design: The front shows slaves loading cotton with a sailor to the left. The note is hand numbered and signed. The rear is blank.
Approximate size: 3 x 7 inches.
Condition: Good. The paper is soft with creases, edge wear, soiling and small holes. The border is nearly complete.

Comments: According to "Confederate Paper Money" by Grover T. Criswell, "Type 13 is the first and largest denomination notes issued under the Act of August 19th, 1861, which was for $80,000,000. While notes under this act were being produced, an additional $50,000,000 was authorized by the Confederate Congress on December 24, 1861. The presses were flying and there were nine major and dozens of minor varieties of this largest circulating denomination."
