Confederate Saber & Scabbard Remains

SOLD

This excavated partial Confederate saber and scabbard were both recovered in Amelia County, VA along Lee's retreat route to Appomattox. Both pieces are brand new to the market and were just acquired from the digger's estate. What remains is the top half of both saber and scabbard, both of which are in good solid condition. Though missing its guard, the saber still has its brass pommel solidly affixed to the tang of the blade. The unstopped fuller extends the length of the blade. The saber, including its tang and pommel, measures approximately 18-1/4 inches in overall length. The blade itself measures 12-3/4 inches. The width of the blade measures approximately 1-1/4 inch at its widest point. The iron scabbard, measuring 14-5/8 inches in overall length, has a large brass mount with iron ring and a crude mold seam running the length of the scabbard. Its brass throat is present with several Roman numeral X's stamped into its top which likely indicates that it was a product of Confederate arms-maker Louis Froelich of Kenansville, NC. While the saber fits quite comfortably into the scabbard, I cannot say with all certainty that they were recovered together. There are no repairs and this Confederate relic saber and scabbard will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War edged weapon or general relic collection.
