SOLD

Item: Confederate .69 Caliber "Raleigh" Pattern Bullet (aka. Garibaldi)
Condition: Very good, excavated, tan-white patina. There is a small nick on one side of the upper body. Uneven thickness of base rim with slightly out-of-round skirt. A very nice example with no repairs.
Recovered:
 Gettysburg, PA area.
Approximate size:
.665 inch. diameter, 1.08 inch. length, 527 grains weight.
Reference: Similar examples can be found in the following Civil War relic reference books:

  • "Round Ball to Rimfire, Part Four" by Dean S. Thomas, on page 236, items 561 & 562.
  • "Some Civil War Bullets 2" by Thomas J. Stelma, page 174.
  • "Civil War Projectiles II Small Arms & Field Artillery with Supplement" by W. Reid McKee and M. E. Mason, Jr. on pages 35, item 199.

See above pages in additional images.

Comments: This bullet is another fine example of Confederate manufacturing crudeness often observed in Confederate relics. According to Round Ball to Rimfire, Part Four, by Dean Thomas, on page 236, item 561, these bullets were "made at the N.C. Institute for the Deaf & Dumb and the Blind". This bullet will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War bullet or general relic collection.
