Confederate 3-Inch Bourreleted Read Shell - Virginia 1864 Model

SOLD

Item: Confederate 3-Inch Bourreleted Read Shell - Virginia 1864 Model
Construction: Cast iron with copper fuze adaptor and sabot.
Fuzing: Paper time fuze.
Approximate size:  Weight: 6.2 pounds. Diameter: 2.9 inches.
Condition: Fair, excavated, with no repairs. The shell has been professionally sawed in half to expose its inner materials. Visible in the cross-section is the rust-concreted gun powder (now inert) in the bottom of the shell, casting flaw bubbles in the copper sabot, and the conical lathe dimple in the center of the base. See a labeled cross-section view in the additional images for these items. The exterior of the shell is rough and in the raw, as it has not been coated. There is base chipping which is the result of the over-expansion of its thick copper sabot which approximately one half remains intact. The cut at the shell's equator is even and smooth. This shell has been deactivated.
Recovered: By Peter George, Spotsylvania Court House, VA. Mr. George's research revealed it was fired in support of CS General Ewell’s flank-attack on Grant’s yankees at the Harris Farm, May 19th 1864, the final day of the Spotsylvania Court House battles.
Comments: This shell has been in Peter George’s personal collection since he dug it about 40 years ago. Mr. George, co-authored "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War" and is one of the leading experts on artillery of the American Civil War. It will not only be an excellent educational tool, but will also be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery or general relic collection.

NOTE: Each half may be purchased individually for $265.00. Both halves will be available as a pair until one of the halves sells. Email Virginia Relics if you wish to purchase one half to arrange the purchase.
