Confederate Read Shell Base with Copper Sabot

This excavated Confederate Read shell base with copper sabot measures approximately 3 inches in diameter. It was acquired directly from the digger who recovered it from the Cumberland Church, VA area. The copper sabot, with seven lands and grooves, has a very pleasing rich-green patina. The iron was lightly clear coated long ago, but the coating is mostly worn away. Since minor flaking is presently occurring, a light re-coating using clear varnish spray would be in order to continue its preservation. A lathe dimple is present in the bottom of the base. It weighs approximately 1.6 pounds and is approximately 1.83 inches in height. A complete fired but unexploded 3-inch Read shell with sabot is included in the additional images for reference only. This Read shell base will be an excellent educational tool or display piece for any artillery or general relic collection.
