Comments: This large sheet brass waist belt buckle was acquired directly from the immediate family of the now deceased digger who hunted Civil War trails, campsites, and battle sites throughout central Virginia and adjacent states for several decades. According to "Confederate General Service Accoutrement Plates" by Lon W. Keim, M.D. on page 50, regarding "Rectangular Plates", the author writes: "Plain rectangular brass waist belt plates saw widespread use by the Confederates in all theatres of the war. These simple yet attractive plates were easily produced, and featured belt hooks either cast with the plate or later soldered onto the reverse. Many specimens were personalized with soldiers' names and unit designations engraved or scratched onto the surface. During the final two years of the conflict, a particular style of rectangular brass belt plate became pronounced. This was a thin rectangular brass waist belt plate with a brazed iron belt hook soldered to the reverse, a sturdy hook arrangement that proved durable in the field. These latter specimens were die stamped or hand cast." Another excavated example of this type plate can be found in "Excavated Artifacts from Battlefields and Campsites of The Civil War" by Stanley S. Phillips on page 41 as item 3. This plate will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War plate or general relic collection.
