Item: Confederate Army Officer Coat Button
Backmark: Blank with a depressed channel.
Design: Twelve five-pointed stars surround an eagle on a lined field. Flat border.
Construction: High convex, two-piece.
Approximate size: 25 mm.
Condition: Excellent, excavated, secure shank present. Brown patina with ample gilt on both front and back. There are no pushes, cracks, breaks, or repairs.
Recovered: Unknown.

Comments: According to "Uniform Buttons of the United States 1776-1865" by Warren K. Tice, buttons of this classification were made by Casimir Rouyer of New Orleans. The button offered here was acquired directly from the family of a local Virginia digger and will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War button or general relic collection.
