Confederate Sword Hanger

SOLD

This excavated Confederate sword hanger is in very good condition and was recovered in the area of Brandy Station, Culpeper County, VA. It is constructed of cast brass which now has a very pleasing dusty green patina. It measures approximately 2-1/2 inches in overall length. These devices hung from the leather sword belt and were designed to carry the officer's swords. Similar examples of sword hangers, both CS and US, can be found in the following Civil War relic reference books:

  • "Civil War Artifacts: A Guide for the Historian" by Howard R. Crouch on page 207, #5.
  • "Excavated Artifacts From Battlefields and Campsites of the Civil War 1861-1865" by Stanley S. Phillips on page 183 in illustration #8.

Scans of the above noted reference book pages are included in the additional images.

This sword hanger has no cracks, breaks, or repairs and will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War campsite, battlefield, or general relic collection.
