Item: Confederate Time Fuze Adaptor for Spherical Projectile.
Construction: Cast copper.
Approximate size: Diameter: 1.23 inches. Length: 1.38 inches.
Condition: Very good, excavated. The two spanner holes to either side of the center fuse hole are clearly visible. The fuse exhibits slight thread distortion. It has an overall dusty yellow-green patina with no cracks, breaks, or repairs.
Recovered: Richmond, VA area in the 1950 - 60's by local Virginia relic hunter, Jim Cullinan. Jim was one of the early Civil War relic hunters that started out with a true "army mine detector" that actually required a backpack to operate.
Comments: This adaptor was acquired direct from the digger. The length of this particular adaptor indicates that it was for use in spherical artillery projectiles. The two spanner holes accommodated a wrench used to screw it into the shell. Once the adaptor was in place, a paper time fuze, was inserted into the center hole. This Confederate time fuze adaptor will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery or general relic collection.
