Confederate Time Fuze Adaptor for Spherical Projectile

Item: Confederate Time Fuze Adaptor for Spherical Projectile
Construction: Cast copper.
Use: To support a paper time fuze and to form a tight seal. The two spanner holes, visible on the top of the adaptor and to either side of the center hole, accommodated a wrench used to screw the device into the shell. Once the adaptor was in place, a paper time fuze, would be inserted into the center hole.
Approximate size:
Head diameter: 1.27 inches; Body diameter: 1.00 inch; Length: 1.34 inches; 12 threads per inch.
Condition:
Excellent, excavated. Its surface has a light green patina with soil in some areas. A small portion of its paper time fuse is still visibly lodged in place. The threads appear to be in good condition. There are no cracks, breaks, dents, or repairs.
Recovered:
Cedar Creek, VA area.
