This excavated Confederate type I Mullane sabot is constructed of cast brass and measures approximately 3 inches in diameter. This plate would have been affixed to the bottom of a 3-inch Mullane artillery shell. Mullane shells are often recovered without their sabots, and this is a unique opportunity to add one to a shell that is without. This example is from a fired shell and clearly shows twelve lands and grooves as a result of the rifling of the 3-inch gun it was fired from. It was acquired directly from the digger's family who recovered it in the area of Cedar Mountain, VA. It remains in its "as dug" raw state with a very pleasing dusty brown-green patina. This Mullane sabot base will be an excellent addition to any artillery or general relic collection.
