Item: Federal 12 Pounder Bormann Fuzed Half Case-Shot Shell
Construction: Cast iron with solder Bormann time fuze, iron support-plug, leather washer, lead shot in a sulphur matrix.
Approximate size: Weight: 4.8 pounds. Diameter: 4.46 inches.  
Condition: Very good, excavated, with no repairs. Visible in the cross-section are approximately 14 lead balls as well as the cross-sections of the fuze and under-plug. In the additional images is an image of a cross section labeled to indicate these items and more. The cut at the shell's equator is even and smooth, and the exterior iron is moderately pitted. This half case-shot is inactive.

Comments: This half case-shot is from the personal collection of Peter George. Mr. George, co-authored "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War" and is one of the leading experts on artillery of the American Civil War. It will not only be an excellent educational tool, but will also be a nice addition to any excavated Civil War artillery or general relic collection.
