Item: US Parrott, 2.9 Inch Projectile Base with Brass Sabot
Construction: Iron with brass ring sabot.
Approximate size: Weight: 1.6 pounds. Diameter: 2.86 inches.
Condition: Fair, excavated. Shell base only with brass sabot. Iron is in good stable condition.
Comments: According to Peter George, co-author of "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War", "this type shell made their battlefield appearance in Spring 1863. It appears to be unfired, as I cannot see any rifling marks at all. This type almost always “takes the rifling” extremely well. To see no rifling-marks at all strongly indicates it exploded without being fired. Perhaps it was in a caisson that got hit and blew up".
