Carved Eagle Plate Brass Skin

This excavated carved eagle, originally from an eagle plate, is likely the product of an idle soldier. Using a sharp edge, much of the brass skin or front of the plate was cut away leaving an eagle with arrows in its right talon, an olive branch in its left and one wing. The brass has a chocolate brown patina with a slice between the eagle and its right wing and minor bends. Eagle plates are typically constructed of a circular disk with a thin stamped sheet brass front and a solder backing imbedded with wire loops (see the additional images for an example of its use). The example offered in this listing is missing its solder backing and attachment hooks. It measures approximately 1-3/4 x 2-1/4 inches or 44 x 57mm. The plate was acquired directly from the Virginia digger who recovered it from the Quantico, VA area. Included in the additional images is an image of the digger (on left), with his hunting buddies and their detectors dating to the 1970-80s. A glass top display case will be included at no additional charge. This carved eagle plate will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War plate, campsite art or general relic collection.
