Eagle Plate - Jericho Mill

SOLD

Item: Excavated US eagle plate.
Construction:
Stamped thin sheet brass with solder fill and two iron wire loops (now missing).
Condition:
Very good, excavated. Its brass face has a brown patina with a very light layer of encrusted soil all on a highly detailed, well-defined eagle clutching arrows in its right talon and an olive branch in its left. To the left of the eagle's right talon is an unusual bulge in the brass which may be the result of a flaw in the sheet brass when stamped or perhaps expansion due to time out in the elements. There is no break in the brass however. With the exception of minor surface flaking, there is a near full complement of solder in the rear. The iron attachment loops are no longer present. Also found on the rear is what is believed to be "white-out" with the digger's inventory number in black ink. The plate has no cracks, breaks, bends, or repairs.
Recovered:
"Fed. V Corps camp s. of Jericho Mill, North Anna River, Hanover Co., VA."
Approximate diameter:
 63 mm.
Comments:  This eagle plate was acquired directly from the digger's family. The digger hunted Civil War trails, campsites, and battle sites throughout central Virginia and adjacent states for several decades. Included in the additional images of these relics is an image of the digger's index card indicating, in most cases, the relic's identification, assessment of condition, recovery date & location, and other general information. In cases where there are discrepancies between the digger's description and Virginia Relic's description, Virginia Relic's description shall be deemed correct.  The display case, its label, and an image of the index card will be included with the plate. This eagle plate will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War plate or general relic collection. The display case measures approximately 4-1/2 x 5-1/2 x 3/4 inches.
