Item: Eagle Plate
Use: Federal. Eagle plates, also known as breast plates, shoulder belt plates, and cross belt plates, were displayed on the belt that held the soldier's cartridge box. Eagle plates with two belt attachment loops were purely ornamental and proudly worn by Union soldiers with the belt slung over the shoulder and across the chest. Construction: Die stamped thin sheet brass with solder fill and two iron wire loops.
Condition: Good, excavated. The brass front has a pleasing greyish-brown patina. There are two rust-bumps at the eagle's left talon as a result of the rusting of the rear iron loop. The rim is present but does have minor dents, bends and cracks primarily between the 8 and 12 o'clock positions. The rear retains a near complete complement of solder the surface of which is pebbled. One belt attachment loop present and bent over to the rear. There are no repairs.
Recovered: Charles City County, VA.
Approximate size: 65 mm.
