Eagle Plate - Culpeper, VA

SOLD

Item: Excavated Federal Eagle Plate
Use: Eagle plates, also known as breast plates, shoulder belt plates, and cross belt plates, were displayed on the cross belt that held the soldier's cartridge box. The two loop type, such as this one, was ornamental and proudly worn by Union soldiers with the belt slung over the shoulder and across the chest. See the additional images in this listing for an image showing its use.
Construction: Stamped thin sheet brass with solder fill and iron wire loops.
Condition: Fair, excavated. The Culpeper County, VA soil covers what I believe to be a green patina on the brass face of this plate. Other uncleaned soil covered plates from this digger's collection were also observed with green patinas. The face shows an eagle clutching arrows in its right talon and an olive branch in its left. There are a couple of rust spots on the lower portion of the plate's face. The rim has nicks and dents. The rear solder is eighty percent complete as a section is missing in the 12-2:30 o’clock position as shown in the rear image. The remaining solder is solid and its two wire attachment loops are no longer present. The plate has no repairs.
Recovered: Culpeper County, VA
Approximate size: 64 mm.
Comments: The plate is being offered in nearly the same state that it was in when it was recovered, as the digger did not feel compelled to clean his relics. If you like the recently "dug" appearance, then this relic will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War plate or general relic collection.
