Item: Eagle Plate - Stamped "30"
Use: Federal. Eagle plates, also known as breast plates, shoulder belt plates, and cross belt plates, were displayed on the belt that held the soldier's cartridge box. Eagle plates with two belt attachment loops were purely ornamental and proudly worn by Union soldiers with the belt slung over the shoulder and across the chest. See the additional images in this listing for an image showing its use.
Construction: Die stamped thin sheet brass with solder fill and two iron wire loops.
Condition: Excellent, excavated, loops present. The brass front has a pleasing army green patina with very light encrusted soil residue. The rim is fully intact and with no issues. The rear retains a complete complement of solder with the numeral "30" stamped into it (see more on this stamping in the Comments section below). Both iron attachment loops are complete, lightly clear-coated for preservation and nearly straight up. The plate has no cracks, breaks, bends or repairs.
Recovered: Unknown
Approximate size: 63 mm.
Comments: It is a rare occurrence to recover a plate with soldier carvings or manufacturer stamps; it is even rarer to recover one with stamped numbers and/or letters. It is uncertain what letters and numbers actually represent. There are some that believe they may indicate the company and/or regiment to which the soldier belonged and others suggest that the number corresponded to a particular soldier within a company. In either case this unique plate will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War accoutrement plate or general relic collection.
