Item: Enfield Bullet with Boxwood Plug - Mac Mason Lettering
Condition: Excellent, excavated. The bullet has an overall waxy tan surface patina. Its base is marked "C. S. .570 / ENFIELD RIFLE / _ IN CAVITY / 1.165". Boxwood plug present.
Recovered: Unknown
Approximate size: .571-inch diameter; 1.065-inch length; 561 grains weight.
Comments: It appears that Mac Mason believed the bullet cavity was manufactured with a raised letter "S" and initially lettered the bullet "S IN CAVITY". At some point it was determined that there was no "S", and it was mostly erased, leaving only " IN CAVITY" on the bullet's side. Other than very minor surface chipping, the bullet is in outstanding shape with no repairs.
Mac Mason was a historian, author, and artist who applied his skillful and artistic lettering to many Civil War artifacts. This bullet is one of those artifacts and is marked with his recognizable printing style. Mac Mason co-authored "Civil War Projectiles II Small Arms & Field Artillery with Supplement" which is still widely used by diggers and collectors in the identification of Civil War bullets, cartridges, artillery shells and fuzes.
