This unusual, excavated field made engineer insignia is one of only a few that were recovered by renowned Virginia relic hunter, Gene Cooley. Constructed of thinly cast lead, it measures approximately 19 x 27 mm and is in good solid condition. It has a whitish-grey patina with no cracks, breaks or repairs. None of the badges have any means of attachment, or remnants thereof, so it is unclear as to their exact use. Gene advised that this one, and the only others known, were recovered from a mud flat along the shore of the James River adjacent to a large 1862 Federal encampment in Charles City County, VA. Two of these badges, and the brass (or possibly silver) mold, were pictured and described in a 2005 issue of the North South Trader's Civil War magazine, Volume 31, Number 3 in the "Field Recoveries" section at the bottom of page 17. Another example was also pictured and described in a 2008 issue, Volume 33, Number 3 in the article, "Rare Topographical Engineers Cap Insignia" on page 48. These pages, along with an image of Gene holding a display case of two of the badges, are included in the additional images. Read more about Gene Cooley by clicking the link. This is a rare opportunity to acquire one these badges as it will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War insignia or general relic collection.
