Epaulettes

SOLD

This pair of epaulettes also known as shoulder scales are in fair to very good condition. They have matching green patinas and include their attachment bars which are still soldered to the rear. While the epaulette pictured on the right is in very good solid condition, the one on the left has separated where the top scale meets the larger top plate. The two sections are both solid and could be easily mended together. No repairs have been made to either epaulette.

Similar excavated Civil War epaulettes can be found in the following Civil War relic reference books:

  • "Civil War Artifacts" by Howard Crouch on page 174, items 2 & 3
  • "Excavated Artifacts from Battlefields and Campsites of The Civil War" by Stanley S. Phillips on page 189 as items 5 & 6
  • "Excavated Artifacts from Battlefields and Campsites of The Civil War Supplement One" by Stanley S. Phillips on page 186 as items 1 & 2.

See scans of the above pages in the additional images.

These epaulettes were acquired directly from the Virginia digger who recovered them from the Quantico, VA area along the Potomac River. Included is a scanned image of the digger (on left), with his hunting buddies and their detectors dating to the 1970-80s. They will display very nicely in any excavated Civil War uniform, campsite, battlefield or general relic collection.
