Excavated Field-Made Carved Ring

SOLD

This excavated carved lead ring was recovered along with other Civil War relics in the Fredericksburg, VA area. While silver, brass, & copper rings are found, finding one made of lead is unusual. It measures approximately 7/8 inch in diameter and has a dull white waxy patina. It is well rounded and the carve marks on the exterior are clearly visible. Occasionally recognizable carved lead objects are recovered from Civil War campsites and trails. Most often, it's just whittle marks on a bullet, but every now and then, an object such as this ring is found likely crafted by a soldier using their pocket knives just to pass the idle time perhaps missing his girl back home. Similar examples of this excavated ring can be found in the following relic reference books:

  • "Excavated Artifacts from Battlefields and Campsites of The Civil War" by Stanley S. Phillips on page 196.
  • "Excavated Artifacts from Battlefields and Campsites of The Civil War Supplement One" by Stanley S. Phillips on page 138.

Scans of the above noted reference book pages are included in the additional images. This carved ring will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War soldier personal item, campsite, or general relic collection.
