Item: Federal 3-inch Type I Hotchkiss Shell Re-Assembled Ground Burst
Cannon: 3-inch ordnance rifle
Construction: Iron shell
Approximate size: Weight: 6.2 pounds. Diameter: 2.90 inches. Length: 6-5/8 inches.
Sabot: Lead band.
Condition: Excavated, fired. The shell was likely a ground burst which has been reassembled using adhesive. The exterior shell's surface is minimally pitted. One side of the shell's nose is missing exposing its interior. Several lead case-shot balls are affixed to the interior wall (see Comments section below). Threads are visible which once held its fuze system which is no longer present. Two sections of the original sabot are present along with its base cup. The smaller section of sabot was once affixed to the shell as remnants of adhesive are still present on its interior side. A small area of the nose and base cup are marked with white paint likely for identification purposes. The shell appears to have been treated with electrolysis. It has been disarmed and ready for display.
Recovered: Ox Ford area of the North Anna River, Hanover County, VA.
Reference: A complete 3-inch type I Hotchkiss shell, with a percussion fuze, is pictured and described in the following reference book:
See above page in additional images.
Comments: This Hotchkiss shell would have originally contained only gunpowder and not case-shot. The case-shot affixed to the interior wall have been added for display purposes. It is from the collection of Glenn Trimmer. The shell will be an excellent educational display piece and addition to any excavated artillery or general relic collection.
