Federal 12-Pounder Case-Shot with Bormann Time Fuze

Item: Federal 12-Pounder Case-Shot with Bormann Time Fuze
Gun: 12-pounder smoothbore, 4.62-inch caliber.
Approximate size: Weight: 11.2 pounds. Diameter: 4.49 inches.
Condition: Very good, excavated, fired, deactivated. The surface of the shell has moderate pitting with some larger divots in the area of the fuze. It has been cleaned and clear-coated for preservation. Its "single slotted" Bormann time-fuze is present with hashmarks and numbers visible. There appears to be a hole punched just beyond the numeral "5". Directly opposite the fuze on the other side of the shell is a drill hole where the gun powder was removed. There are no repairs and is ready for display.
Recovered: Seven Days Battles area of Va.
Reference: A similar Federal 12-pounder shell (not case-shot) with a "single slotted" Bormann fuze, is pictured in the following reference book:

  • "Melton & Pawl's Guide to Civil War Artillery Projectiles", by Jack W. Melton, Jr., and Lawrence E. Pawl, page 32, Fig. III A-10.

See above page in the additional images.

Comments: The Bormann fuze is particularly nice on this example with all of the numbers and most of the hashmarks still visible. According to the artillery reference book "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War", by Dickey and George, "After April 1862, almost every Federal 12-pounder smoothbore shell fired had a Bormann fuze in it, making this the "most common" explosive shell of the War". This 12-pounder case-shot with Bormann time fuze was acquired directly from the digger and will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery or general relic collection.
