Comments:
According to Peter George, co-author of "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War", there are four types of side-plugs: lead, iron, brass, and copper. As stated above, this case-shot has the iron type, and while less frequently encountered than the lead type, it's more so than brass and copper types.  This "side-loader" will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery or general relic collection.
