A few of the case-shot are loose. The gun powder was rendered inert by the saws cutting oil. The cut at the shell's equator is even and smooth, and the exterior iron is moderately pitted. This half case-shot was treated with electrolysis, clear coated, is inactive with no repairs.
Recovered: Unknown
Comments:  According to Peter George, co-author of "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War", "this is a rare variety of Hotchkiss which did not use matrix to hold the case-shot balls in place as they were simply loose in the shell. Consequently, the extreme force of firing setback pressure caused the loose lead balls to be compressed against each other resulting in the compacted shapes visible in the photo". This 3-inch Hotchkiss case-shot half shell will be display piece or excellent educational tool, as well as a great addition to any excavated Civil War artillery, battlefield, or general relic collection.
