Federal 3-Inch Schenkl "Case-Shot" Artillery Shell

Item: Federal 3-Inch Schenkl "Case-Shot" Artillery Shell
Gun: 3-inch wrought iron (ordnance) rifle.
Fuzing: Zinc Schenkl combination percussion & time.
Construction: Cast iron.
Approximate size: Weight: 6.6 pounds. Diameter: 2.93 inches, Length: 9 inches.  
Condition: Excellent, excavated. The surface is very smooth and minimally pitted. Printed on shell in faded gold marker, by the digger, is "SCOTT'S FORD / PORT REPUB. / VA". Its fuze and papier-mâché sleeve sabot are no longer present. It has been treated with electrolysis and paraffin so as to preserve the iron and is ready for display. The shell is empty and there are no repairs.
Recovered: Scott's Ford, Port Republic, VA.
