Item: Federal 3-Inch Type II Hotchkiss Common Shell - Patent Mark
Gun: 3-inch ordnance rifle.
Construction: Cast iron with lead sabot.
Fuzing: Brass Hotchkiss Type II adaptor for use with a paper time fuze.
Approximate size: Weight: 6.2 pounds. Diameter: 2.90 inches. Length: 6-7/16 inches.
Condition: Very good, excavated, fired. The shell's surface is very smooth with minimal pitting. While the brass fuze adaptor and base cup are present, the lead sabot is not. Cast into the base of the shell is the Hotchkiss patent information. While the mark is difficult to see, a few of the letters and numbers of "HOTCHKISS", "PAT" and date remain visible. A small area of the nose and base cup are marked with white paint likely for identification purposes. The shell has been treated with electrolysis, disarmed and has no repairs.
Recovered: Curles Neck, VA area.
Reference: A complete 3-inch type II Hotchkiss common shell is pictured and described in the following reference book:
See above page in additional images.
Comments: This Type II Hotchkiss artillery shell was acquired directly from the collection of Glenn Trimmer. The shell will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery or general relic collection.
