Item: Federal 7-Inch Dyer Shell - Huge Shell in Two Pieces
Gun: Rifled 42-pounder.
Construction: Cast iron with and lead cup sabot.
Fuzing: Wood drive-in fuze adaptor for paper time fuze.
Approximate size: Weight: 77.6 pounds; Diameter: 6.92 inches; Length: 14-3/8 inches.
Condition: Excavated, fired. The shell is split into two sections just above the sabot. The iron is stable, shows minimal surface pitting, and appears to have been treated with electrolysis. The wood fuze adaptor is no longer present. The sabot shows nine visible lands and grooves. This shell is empty and has not been repaired.
Recovered: Unknown.
Reference: A similar example is found in the following reference book:
See above page in additional images.
Comments: The split is likely the result of freezing interior water while out in the elements. According to the above-mentioned book, "Most 7-inch Dyer shells failed to explode, because the sabots cut off the flame before it could ignite the time fuzes. Many battlefield recoveries have sabots that have been hacked by a hatchet. Even multiple sever cuts were not effective."
This Federal Dyer case-shot was acquired directly from the family of the digger and will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery, battlefield, or general relic collection.
NOTE: Due to the size and weight of this shell, shipping is not an option. Please contact me in advance of purchase to discuss and determine pick-up or alternative delivery options.
