U.S. Ames Model 1832 Artillery Short Sword and Scabbard

SOLD

This U.S. Ames Model 1832 artillery short sword and scabbard are in very good condition. Resembling a Roman gladiator sword, its overall measurement in scabbard is approximately 25-5/8 inches. The blade measures approximately 19 inches which fits snugly in the scabbard. One side of the ricasso is clearly stamped "N. P. AMES / CABOTVILLE / 1847" with "US" and "S.K" (likely an Ames inspector) on the other side. The blade has two short fullers closer to the ricasso with a longer single fuller extending towards the blade tip. The blade is in very good condition and has a very pleasing dark mottled silver-grey patina. There is a small area of light surface corrosion on one side at the tip as seen in image 20 of 35. The brass grip, now with a dark untouched aged patina, is standard with cast fish scales and an eagle on the pommel. One side of the cross guard is marked "J.W.R" representing U. S. armory inspector James Wolfe Ripley (1843-1855) the other side is stamped "S.K". The leather scabbard, with brass throat and tip, is in good condition with some cracking and crazing of the leather. There are a few areas of surface leather that have flaked off from age as can be seen in the additional images. The brass scabbard tip is missing one rivet resulting in about a 1/4 inch movement of the tip. The tip is also stamped "R.H.K.W" Robert Henry Kirkwood Whitely representing U. S. armory inspector (1854-1858) on one side, and "A.D.K" representing U. S. armory inspector Andrew D. King (1840-1865) on the other. The seam of the leather scabbard on the rear side has separated but still retains enough stiffness to remain nearly joined. The scabbard hardware also has a dark untouched aged patina. This artillery short sword will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War edged weapon, sword, artillery, or general relic collection.
