Federal "Bullseye" Canteen

SOLD

Item: Federal "Bullseye" Canteen
Use: Water container.
Approximate size: 7-1/2 diameter.
Condition: Fair, excavated. Missing lower portion and dented but still in solid condition. Two of the three strap holders remain intact. Its pewter spout is present with a hole at its base on one side, but remains solidly attached. The letters "AD'A" are visible just below its lip (see additional images). It is likely that these letters are part of the manufacturer's stamp of "HORSTMANN PHILAD'A". Clear coated with no repairs.
Recovered: Trevilians, VA area.
Reference: An example of a similar canteen is found in the following canteen reference book:

  • "U.S. ARMY & MILITIA CANTEENS, 1775-1910" on page 125.

See the above page in the additional images.

Comments: This canteen was acquired directly from the digger's family. The digger hunted Civil War trails, campsites, and battle sites throughout central Virginia and adjacent states for several decades. If you appreciate that excavated war torn appearance, then this relic is for you. It will be an excellent display piece and addition to any excavated Civil War accoutrement, battlefield, or general relic collection.
