Item: Federal Infantry 16mm Button
Backmark: Blank
Design: Raised spread wing eagle with letter "I" in shield.
Construction: Convex, two-piece.
Approximate size: 16 mm.
Condition: Excellent, excavated, secure shank present but slightly loose. The front is covered in gilt. It has no pushes, cracks, breaks, or repairs.
Recovered: From Virginia but specifically unknown.
Reference: Tice: Unl. Albert: Unl.
Comments: The interesting feature of this button is the unusual arrangement of the leaves of the branch held in the eagle's right talons. These leaves are in a square arrangement unlike the typical lengthier leaf arrangement. Perhaps in this case it isn't a branch from an olive tree. This button was acquired directly from the digger and will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War button or general relic collection.
